VERSUS – BALANCE places a young birch tree in direct counterweight to a Ford car headlight mounted on a brass scale. Powered by the headlight’s artificial illumination, the tree depends on the very industrial system against which it is measured.

The work stages ecological survival as structural asymmetry rather than harmonious equilibrium. Growth becomes inseparable from extraction; technological progress and environmental precarity remain locked within the same feedback system.

Positioned between scientific instrument, moral allegory, and living system, the sculpture examines how value is assigned under contemporary capitalism — asking what forms of life are sustained, sacrificed, or rendered dependent within infrastructures of industrial modernity.
